Introducing critically acclaimed Undiscussable
For 18 months Charlie documented stories with victims of domestic abuse alongside what was meant to be the implementation of the ‘landmark’ domestic abuse bill which she also advised on.
This bill fell due to the General Election, it then got reintroduced but delayed due to Brexit and then COVID-19 it is still in progress.
The legislation, was promised 3 years ago, even if it is implemented it still needs to go much further.
Charlie is a survivor of childhood abuse.
Undiscussable is a podcast series that presents these stories and voices, including some of Charlie’s own story. It’s a deeply personal, raw and challenging rethinking of domestic abuse.
Charlie won an Audio Content Fund commission for the second series to be aired on TalkRadio drivetime during 2020 lockdown. She hosted and produced the 8 part live weekly show. Charlie was applauded as exemplary for her inclusive and eye opening journalism always putting survivors at the heart of her storytelling. 100’s of people have contacted her thanking her and disclosing their own experience often for the first time.
In the first lockdown, calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline were running at 49% higher than normal three weeks after lockdown started and there were almost 50 suspected killings, including children the youngest just 2 years old, Lexi.
There were 2 million victims in the UK that we know of in 2019, male and female adults, and given that 85% of people that are victims of domestic abuse don’t go to the police, the amount is grossly under reported and estimated. This statistic doesn’t even include children and teenagers.
